Up for sale is this rare, vintage California pottery flower frog figurine. This sculptural piece features a flamingo standing atop a base; the flower arranging holes perforate the base. This piece is glazed a glossy red color; the underneath of the base is unglazed buff clay. It stands approximately 5.5 inches tall, and the base is approximately 2.5 inches diameter.
Unpacked, it weighs 4 ounces. This would be a fabulous addition to a collection of early California art pottery.This unsigned piece is an example of Ra Art pottery. Later during the same decade, he produced Ra Art in Richmond, California. Hickman, also known as "Hick, " is best known as the chief designer of Royal Haeger pottery at the Haeger pottery of Dundee, Illinois. Hickman worked at Haeger from 1938 to 1944 and also from the 1950s through 1969.
Hickman's lesser known ventures included his stint at Garden City, his work at Ra Art, plus his 1940s operation in Tampa, Florida. His Terrace Ware pottery was produced in Paris, Tennessee at Russell Potteries. He also designed works in glass, metal, and wood. Hickman is a well-regarded American designer, known for his flamboyant designs. This piece looks great overall, with no chips or cracks. There is some fine crazing. There are light wear marks to the unglazed foot.There is no maker's mark evident on the piece. The photographs are a large part of the condition description.
