This is a detailed brooch signed by Pat Garrett who started making fine jewelry in 1973. It is mostly copper cut outs of an etched flamingo running/flying out of the water with foliage around. On the back, it is engraved: P Garrett 87 copper sterling 14K. Magnify photos 2,3 & 4.

The beak and flower are 14K gold. Underneath is the stone with threads of white and turquoise crystals. I was unable to ID the stone but the a rtist herself, Pat Garret, emailed me to say it is a Limb Cast Agate which forms when volcanic ash lands on tree branches. I would guess the stone represents the water. The sterling silver is around the stone and 2 tiny stars, though the silver is so tarnished with age that it doesn't stand out from the copper.

You have a running flamingo pin dated 87 (kind of combined with my signature)... I very much appreciate you leaving the patina alone...

And wish you VERY good luck with your sale... The stone is a limb cast agate... One of my very favorites... The original oxidation is often stripped by people who think every thing is supposed to shine.... And that can ruin a piece in a way tarnish doesn't....

There was a large bird pin of mine listed a while ago that just was so hurtful to see because of the stripped patina... You are doing the right thing by not'polishing'...

Nearly all of my work was oxidized in order to highlight the drawing and give the pieces depth... That kind of oxidation doesn't take well to tarnish removal and leaves the metal (at best) blotchy... So THANK you very much for letting things'be'.. Before my 101-year-old mother passed away she gave me all her jewelry including my grandmother's and some of my great-grandmothers.

Since Pat Garrett dated this 1987, this could have been either my mother's or my grandmother's (died in 1993). Check out my other items. It can only be added to only at the very bottom of the page where no one looks. Try misspelling your item and see what comes up.

There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach. The solution to this dilemma.
